Mentor
Mentor was settled in 1797 when Charles Parker, a surveyor from
Vermont, built a cabin on the marsh. This was the first settlement in
what would later become Lake County.
Mentor Township officially formed in 1815 and was primarily a
farming community. In 1855, the people that lived in the center of
Mentor chose to incorporate 3,000 acres in the middle of the township,
resulting in the formation of Mentor Village. There were few businesses
at that time and most commerce was conducted in nearby Painesville or
downtown Cleveland.
In 1932, Mentor resident and nurseryman Joseph Kallay developed
Blaze, the country?s first patented rose. After that, rose growing
became big business and Mentor became known as the Rose Capital of the
Nation.
After a previous failed attempt to consolidate the two Mentors ?
the township and the village incorporated as the City of Mentor on
December 18, 1963.
Today, more than 50,000 residents and 1,700 businesses call Mentor
their home. Our location near State Route 2 and Interstate 90 means
we?re only a short drive from Cleveland?s arts, culture and sports
venues. And there?s also plenty to do right here, whether it?s dining at
one of our 150 restaurants, shopping in Ohio?s 6th largest retail
center, or participating in the hundreds of recreational programs
offered through the City?s Recreation Department. | |

Willoughby
Willoughby's first permanent settler was David Abbott in 1798, pre-dating Ohio's bid for statehood by five years. Abbott and his family had close relations to the local tribe of Erie Indians along the banks of the river the Indians called the "Sha-ga-rin" or Clear Water. This river was later called the Chagrin River, though the derivation of the name remains in dispute.
In 1835, the village was permanently named "Willoughby" in honor of Dr. Westel Willoughby, Jr., a public health official that the founders of the Medical College, which was based in the city, hoped to attract to the area. This medical college would later merge with Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, OH to eventually become Western Reserve University, the predecessor to Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University. Many historical buildings from this period survive to this date, affording the downtown Willoughby area some outstanding specimens of 19th century architecture.
Over time, Willoughby sent citizens into every major U.S. military conflict. Several memorials and historical relics are displayed in Wes Point Park, the center of downtown Willoughby, to honor those that have served.
Concord
The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are
elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning

presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is
also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term
beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in
November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the
fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the
remaining trustees. As of 2008, the board members are Caroline Luhta,
Christopher Galloway, and Paul Malchesky, and the fiscal officer is Amy
